Price hand-knit and crochet items with honest labor math plus a market-band reality check. Covers 10 item types across acrylic, wool, cotton, alpaca, cashmere, and bamboo.
Step 1 of 4: Item + yarn
Item type and yarn. Yardage comes off your pattern; cost per yard comes off your yarn label.
Fiber type affects buyer perceived value. Wool / alpaca sells 30-50% higher than acrylic of the same item.
From pattern or project notes. Beanie 180-250. Scarf 300-500. Adult sweater 1,000-1,600. Blanket 700-1,800.
Acrylic $0.03-$0.05. Wool $0.07-$0.12. Cotton $0.05-$0.08. Alpaca $0.15-$0.30. Cashmere $0.40-$0.80.

Why knit/crochet is the hardest craft to price profitably
Most crafts have a cost-to-price ratio that lets you charge a defensible markup without exceeding what buyers will pay. Knit and crochet is different. The labor is so time-intensive that honest costing regularly produces retail prices 2-4x above market band. A 40-hour hand-knit sweater at $25/hr has $1,000 of labor alone. Market price for that sweater: $150-$280.
This calculator surfaces the gap. It returns your honest cost-based retail AND the typical Etsy market band for your item type. When your retail lands above band, the warning tells you what effective hourly rate you would actually earn if you sold at market mid-band. That trade-off is the core decision of this craft.
Three strategies that actually produce sustainable margin
1. Faster patterns + premium fiber. Bulky yarn, simple stitch, alpaca or merino. Cuts labor 40-60% while unlocking the top of the market band. A $55 beanie in luxury yarn at 3 hours of labor pays $15-$18/hr effective. Not enough to live on but respectable for a side-hustle.
2. Pattern sales instead of finished items. Write the pattern once. Sell the PDF at $5-$12 on Etsy or Ravelry. Margin 95%+. Scales independently of your physical making capacity. Requires writing + testing skill (or buying from a test-knitter).
3. Custom / commission work. Pre-sell to a specific customer at 1.5-2x market band. Custom fit, custom color, personalized elements. Requires strong social presence (Instagram, TikTok) or established wholesale relationships. Pays $25-$40/hr effective when it works.
Worked example: wool scarf
380 yards of wool at $0.08/yd = $30.40 yarn. 8 hours of labor at $25/hr = $200. Purchased pattern $6.50. Notions $2. Packaging $2.50. Total cost: $241.40.
At 50% margin, retail = $482.80. Market band for scarves: $28-$80. The math has blown past the band by 6x. Effective hourly yield at market mid-band ($54): ($54 - $40.90 materials) / 8 hrs = $1.64/hr. That is the honest reality.
Strategies to close the gap: use $0.04/yd acrylic instead ($15 yarn, $200 retail still impossible); switch to bulky weight cutting time to 3 hours ($10 yarn + $75 labor + extras = $90 cost, $180 retail, still above band but close); or sell the pattern at $7 instead (write 4 hrs, sell 50 copies = $350 revenue, $87.50/hr effective).
