Candle pricing fails in predictable ways. The wax looks cheap, so makers charge like the wax is the only cost. Then Etsy takes 13%, shipping eats another margin line, and the $18 4oz tin that felt profitable delivers $3 of real profit per unit. The tools here fix the math.

The four cost lines most candle shops undercount
1. Fragrance oil at real load
Industry-standard fragrance load is 6-10% of wax weight, not a round 1oz of FO per candle. CandleScience and Bramble Berry oils run $25-$45 per 16oz. At 8% load, an 8oz soy candle needs 0.64oz of FO. At $1.75/oz effective rate, that is $1.12 of fragrance on a single candle. Most new shops enter "a splash" and underprice by $0.50-$1.20 per unit.
2. Wick cost per unit
CD wicks, ECO wicks, or wooden wicks: $0.08-$0.45 per candle. Wooden wicks are pricier ($0.30-$0.55) but drive a 15-25% retail premium because shoppers perceive them as premium. Budget $0.20 as the average for any well-chosen wick system.
3. Pour + cure labor
Real pour time is 3-6 minutes per candle in a batch of 12. Add 30 seconds for wick centering, 1 minute for labeling, 1 minute for packaging. Call it 7 minutes total per unit. At a $28 maker rate, that is $3.27 of labor on every candle. Skipping this line is why handmade candle prices feel hostile to the maker.
4. Etsy fees + shipping
Etsy takes 6.5% transaction + 3-4% payment processing + $0.20 listing = ~11% total. Heavy candles ship expensively; a single 8oz jar costs $7-$10 Priority. If you offer free shipping, that cost comes out of your margin. At $22 retail with $8 absorbed shipping, your take-home is $22 - $2.42 fees - $8 shipping - cost of goods = much less than the sticker price suggests.
