SVG & Digital Download Pricing Calculator

Price SVG cut files, digital planners, embroidery designs, sublimation PNGs, and crochet patterns. Returns suggested price, commercial-license upgrade price, bundle price, and break-even download count.

Step 1 of 4: Design

Presets

Pick what you are selling. The suggested price scales with the design type because buyer expectations differ: SVG cut files are $3-$6 territory, digital planners are $10-$25.

Include sketching, vectorizing, file formatting, uploading, and listing creation. Most SVGs 1-3 hours. Planners 8-20.

$

Design work often commands $30-$50/hr once you have a portfolio. Beginners start $20-$25.

Digital download economics are volume-based

Unlike physical craft products, digital designs have near-zero unit cost. Your only real cost is the design time. That means the business model is "design once, sell many." A 2-hour SVG that sells 100 times earns $400+; one that sells 5 times earns $20. The pricing framework focuses on break-even downloads and realistic volume.

Break-even math: design time × hourly rate ÷ (suggested price × (1 - platform fee)) = downloads needed to cover design time. A 3-hour SVG at $25/hr needs $75 recovered. At $6 suggested price with Etsy 11% fees, you net $5.34 per download. Break-even = 15 downloads. First 15 pay for the creation; everything after is pure profit.

The commercial license tier is where margin lives

Personal-only SVGs live at $4-$6 retail. Small commercial unlocks $7-$12. Unlimited commercial reaches $15-$25 for the same file. Same design, different buyer, much higher margin. Most shops underprice by only listing at personal tier; adding a commercial license option to your listings often raises average order value 40-60%.

Worked example: simple SVG

1 hour of design at $25/hr = $25 design cost. Base SVG price at small-commercial tier = $4 × 1.8 = $7.20. Plus 2 extra formats ($1 bonus) = $8.20 suggested price.

Net per download after 11% Etsy fees: $8.20 × 0.89 = $7.30. Break-even: $25 ÷ $7.30 = 4 downloads. At 50 expected downloads: gross revenue $410, design cost $25, platform fees $45. Net profit ≈ $340. For a 1-hour investment, that is $340/hour effective rate.

Four mistakes that kill digital shops

1. Racing to the bottom. $1 SVGs do not pay even at volume. A $1 file earns $0.89 net per Etsy sale. At 500 sales, that is $445 before factoring in design time. Price at $4 minimum.

2. Not offering a commercial tier. Leaving the 1.8x to 3x multiplier on the table because you only list personal use.

3. Uniform pricing across listing types. A simple 1-hour SVG and a 10-hour illustrated planner should not cost the same. Adjust price to design time invested.

4. Giving up before volume compounds. Digital shops are long-tail. Listing 20 designs in your first month often produces 1-5 monthly sales. Listing 200 designs over a year can produce 50-200 monthly sales as the compound effect of search visibility kicks in.
