Packaging Cost Calculator

Calculate the real cost of packaging every Etsy order. Nine components, five product presets, monthly and annual spend, and a packaging-as-% of AOV check.

Step 1 of 4: Outer packaging

Presets

The outer packaging is the biggest line. Poly mailer, box, or padded envelope. Price per single- order use (not the carton price).

$

Poly mailer $0.15-$0.35. Padded envelope $0.40-$0.80. Box 4x4x4 $0.60-$1.10. Box 10x10x10 $1.80-$3.50.

$

Small clear poly $0.03-$0.08. Use $0 if you do not ship individual products in a protective bag.

$

Paper crinkle, bubble wrap, kraft paper, packing peanuts. Light fragile $0.15-$0.35; heavy fragile $0.40-$0.80.

The per-order cost every Etsy seller underestimates

Most first-year Etsy shops price their products based on material + time and forget packaging entirely. Then they ship 500 orders, wonder why the "profit" in their bank account is $1,200 less than the spreadsheet predicted, and the gap is packaging. A shop doing $30 AOV with $2.40 packaging per order ships away 8% of revenue on mailers, tape, tissue, and labels before counting postage.

The fix is not to skip packaging. It is to price for it. This tool surfaces the real per-order number so you can bake it into your retail price from day one. If the math shows packaging is over 12-15% of AOV, that is an early signal to either raise prices or switch materials.

The nine components most shops forget to price

Mailer/box, inner poly bag, filler, tissue paper, thank-you card, brand sticker, tape, label (paper + ink), and other extras (ribbon, product tag, freebie). Nine line items. Most shops track 2-3 and guess at the rest. Track all nine once, build a packaging cost line in your costing sheet, update quarterly.

Worked example: medium apparel shop

Shirts ship in a white poly mailer ($0.22) with a sticker seal ($0.05), thin tissue paper ($0.05), thank-you card ($0.10), tape ($0.02), thermal label ($0.04), and a small poly bag protecting the shirt inside ($0.06). Total: $0.54 per order. At 80 orders/month that is $43/month or $518/year in packaging materials alone.

On a $28 AOV, packaging is 1.9% of revenue. That is a healthy zone. But if the same shop upgraded to a branded poly mailer ($0.45), branded tissue ($0.18), and custom thank-you card ($0.18), packaging jumps to $1.10 = 3.9% of AOV. Still fine, but double the spend. The calculator makes those tradeoffs visible before you commit to the bulk order.

Packaging is one cost line. Fees, shipping, and labor round it out.
