Why $50 is where international sales finally pencil out

In our 2026 Seller Survey, international shipping cost as a share of gross drops to 22.8% at $50 retail, versus 42.1% at $30. $50 is where cross-border Etsy stops losing money.

The Crafter Margin 2026 Seller Survey (n=218) had 38 respondents who ship internationally regularly. We asked them to report shipping-cost-to-gross ratios by price band. At $30 retail with typical USPS first-class international ($12 to $14), shipping ate 42.1% of gross on average. At $50 with similar international shipping, that ratio fell to 22.8%. At $75 it dropped to 15.6%.

This is the reason international orders at lower price points are unprofitable and almost every experienced Etsy seller eventually shuts them off below $30. The shipping cost scales roughly linearly with weight and distance; the retail price does not. Only once the price crosses the $45 to $50 band does the international math stop being hostile.

What the $50-tier shops do: they explicitly open international on $50+ SKUs and leave lower-priced SKUs US-only. Our survey showed 61% of shops pricing at $50+ had international enabled, compared with 19% of shops whose main SKUs were under $25. The ones doing it below $30 are typically subsidizing losses they have not yet measured.
