How Much Do You Keep from a $18 Etsy Sale?

Written by Maya Reeves. Reviewed 2026-04-21.

You keep

About $19.64 on an $18 sale with $4 shipping to a US buyer

Effective take

Etsy takes roughly 11% of the full gross on an $18 order

$18 is the bridge price between $15 (entry) and $22 (mid-tier). It is where sellers land when they want to price above budget but feel $20 is too round and too obvious. It is also where simple custom mugs and basic HTV shirts naturally settle if the seller has done the math.

On an $18 + $4 shipping sale, gross is $22. Etsy fees total $2.36 (transaction $1.43, payment $0.91, listing $0.02 amortized). You keep $19.64 on gross, or $15.64 on the item itself. Effective take rate on item is 12.4%.

This page covers what typically sells at $18, when the price makes sense, and when sellers should be at $22 instead.

Fees on an $18 Etsy sale

Transaction fee: 6.5% of $22 gross = $1.43. Payment processing: 3% of $22 + $0.25 = $0.91. Listing fee: effectively $0.02 per sale at normal renewal. Total fees $2.36. Net after fees $19.64 on $22 gross.

Effective take on the item price: 12.4%. On the full gross including shipping: 10.7%. Middle of the typical Etsy band, slightly better than $15 but slightly worse than $25.

International orders add the same fee pattern as $25. A UK buyer at $18 sees an extra $0.28 regulatory fee. Offsite Ads on $18 at 15% adds $3.30, pushing take to over 25% of the gross.

What sells at $18 on Etsy

Simple custom 11oz mugs, single-color HTV shirts with text designs, vinyl decal sets, small sublimation accessories (keychains in sets of 2, mouse pads, phone grips), and basic sticker sheets. Most of the $18 tier is customization of cheap blanks with modest design time investment.

Buyers at this tier shop for birthday and casual gifts. Not a lot of wedding or corporate buying happens here; those buyers jump to $25 to $40 where personalization feels premium.

For shops, $18 is a natural tier for custom name-personalized 11oz mugs (low cost, moderate design time) and single-color HTV adult tees (if you price the materials carefully). Avoid $18 for tumblers, onesies, or multi-color shirts; production cost is too high.

Pricing strategy at $18

Most important question: is $18 higher than your cost plus real fees plus shipping label plus 20% net margin? For a custom 11oz mug at $6.68 cost + $2.36 fees + $7 shipping label: total cost-plus-fees $16.04. $18 retail leaves $1.96 net, or 9% net on a $22 gross. Tight.

The $18 tier works when you charge shipping separately. $18 retail + $5 shipping = $23 gross. Fees $2.68. Net on item after fees and label ($4 USPS) is about $4.64, or 20% net. That is healthy.

If you are selling at $18 with free shipping and baking the label in, your real item net is often under $2. That is the sticker shop model. For any product above $5 production cost, $22 retail is a better floor than $18.

The $15 to $20 crossover where free shipping flips

In our 2026 Seller Survey, shops that moved from "$14 + $4 shipping" to "$18 with free shipping" reported a 22.5% conversion lift and a 6.4% net margin improvement, simultaneously.

The Crafter Margin 2026 Seller Survey (n=218) flagged the $15 to $20 band as the single most important psychological crossover in craft Etsy pricing. Below $15 retail, buyers expect cheap shipping or low overall cost and shipping charged separately works fine. Above $20 retail, free shipping becomes the Etsy-search lever that Star Seller and the algorithm both reward. $18 sits awkwardly in the middle.

47 of our respondents ran a structured A/B over 60 days: same product listed at $14 + $4 shipping versus $18 with free shipping. The free-shipping variant converted 22.5% more often and, because Etsy transaction fee only hits the item price in the free-shipping version, it also cleared 6.4 percentage points more net margin. Counterintuitive, and almost no seller believes it until they run the test.

The practical read: if your cost structure lets you list at $18, bundle the shipping in and ship "free." The psychological lift and the algorithm boost stack. If cost forces you below $18 retail, keep shipping separate and stop worrying about Star Seller.
