Sublimation Ornament Sublimation Cost

Written by Maya Reeves. Reviewed 2026-04-21.

Blank cost

$0.75 to $2.50 depending on shape and material

Retail range

$8 to $18 retail at 55% to 80% margin

Production time

4 to 6 active minutes per ornament

Sublimation ornaments are a seasonal product with outsized impact on Q4 revenue. A shop that dials in ornament pricing can clear 30% to 50% of annual revenue in October through December. The ornament-seller archetype is clear: run a core product line year-round, then pivot production to ornaments from September through early December.

The economics favor volume. Ornaments are cheap to produce, quick to press (4 to 6 minutes active per unit), and buyers purchase in sets of 3 to 12. A $3 ornament at 65% margin clears $8 retail, and most orders bundle 3+ ornaments for $24 to $35 average order value.

This page covers ceramic and aluminum sublimation ornaments. Wood and fabric ornaments require different processes and are not covered here.

What a sublimation ornament actually costs to produce

Blank cost depends on material and shape. Ceramic round and rectangular ornaments run $0.75 to $1.25 at case of 100+. Aluminum ornaments (circle, oval, teardrop shapes) run $1.50 to $2.50 per unit. Photo-frame ornaments (ceramic with metal hanger) run $1.75 to $2.75. MDF ornaments exist but press at lower temperature with sublimation paper; budget $0.50 to $1 per blank.

Ink usage is minimal because ornaments are small. A typical 3-inch ornament uses 10% coverage or less on a half-sheet of paper. Ink cost lands at $0.15 to $0.25 per ornament. Paper: half-sheet $0.08. Other materials (packaging, twine for hang) $0.20 for gift presentation.

Active labor: 1 minute prep (many ornaments fit on one sheet together), 2 minutes press (flat press, low cycle time), 1 to 2 minutes pack (small gift box, ribbon, tag). Total 4 to 5 minutes single. Batched pressing 12 ornaments on one large sheet brings per-unit labor under 2 minutes.

Full per-ornament cost breakdown

Materials $1.48 (blank $1, paper $0.08, ink $0.20, packaging $0.20). Labor $1.67 on 4 min at $25/hr. Overhead $0.10. Total cost $3.25.

At 65% margin retail $5.36. Most Etsy ornament listings sit $8 to $14 for singles, $24 to $40 for sets of 3-6. Net after Etsy fees on a $10 sale with $4 shipping is $3.80 per unit. Sold in sets of 3 at $28, net $11 per order.

Worked example: pricing a ceramic holiday ornament

Round ceramic ornament $1. Paper $0.08, ink $0.20, gift packaging (twine + tag) $0.20. Materials $1.48. 4 min labor = $1.67. Overhead $0.10. Total cost $3.25.

At 65% margin retail $5.36. List single at $10 with $4 shipping. Gross $14. Etsy fees $1.56. Shipping label $4. Net $5.19, or 37% net. Strong.

For a set of 6 custom family ornaments, price at $48 with $4 shipping. Per-unit cost $3.25 x 6 = $19.50. Fees $5.34. Shipping $5. Net $22.16, or 42% net. Gift-set pricing is where ornament shops really perform.

Where to buy ornament blanks

Heat Transfer Warehouse, Conde, and PhotoUSA carry ceramic and aluminum ornament blanks. PhotoUSA has the widest shape variety (circle, star, snowflake, house, heart, dog, cat). Order by October 1 to have stock ready for the November-December sales rush. Last-minute orders past mid-November often backorder.

Custom shape ornaments (laser-cut aluminum in specific silhouettes) run $3 to $5 per blank and justify $18 to $25 retail on premium listings. Niche but profitable for shops with a strong seasonal customer base.
