Handmade Jewelry Pricing Calculator

Written by Dana Whitfield, Handmade jewelry, candle, and fiber shop founder. Last reviewed 2026-04-21 · next check 2026-07-21.

Price earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings with real metal-weight math and honest labor accounting. Built for handmade sellers on Etsy, Faire, and at in-person markets. Produces both retail and wholesale tiers from the same cost base.

Step 1 of 4: Metal

Presets

Pick the metal and enter the weight in grams. Per-gram cost defaults are typical small-quantity retail from Rio Grande, Halstead, and Fire Mountain. Wholesale case buying drops these 20-40%.

Weigh the finished piece on a gram scale. Pair of sterling earrings typically 2-4g. Necklace 3-6g. Ring 1-4g.

$

Current retail ranges: sterling ~$1.80/g, gold-fill ~$3.20/g, solid 14k ~$52/g, brass ~$0.25/g.

Why jewelry pricing is different from other handmade

Jewelry has two quirks other craft categories lack. First, metal prices are volatile, so a pricing sheet from six months ago is probably wrong today. Second, the expected markup is higher (150-250% vs 55-75% for most crafts) because the channel mix includes wholesale to boutiques, consignment at galleries, and direct retail on Etsy — all from one cost base.

Metal volatility is the easier one to manage: check spot prices monthly and update your per-gram cost in the calculator. The markup math is the one that catches new sellers. If you price at 75% markup thinking that is "good enough", you cannot wholesale without losing money. Jewelry needs the higher markup baked in from day one.

Three worked examples

Sterling silver drop earrings with small gemstones. Metal: 3g × $1.80 = $5.40. Gems: $4 (pair of small faceted semiprecious). Findings: $1.20 (ear wires + jump rings). Packaging: $1.50 (pouch + card). Design: 15 min. Assembly: 20 min. Labor at $30/hr: 35/60 × $30 = $17.50. Overhead: $0.50. Total cost: $30.10. At 150% markup: $75 retail, $37.50 wholesale.

14k gold-fill layering necklace. Metal: 4g × $3.20 = $12.80. Gems: $8 (small freshwater pearl or small tourmaline). Findings: $2.50 (chain + clasp + jump rings). Packaging: $2 (branded box + card). Design: 20 min. Assembly: 25 min. Labor at $35/hr: 45/60 × $35 = $26.25. Overhead: $0.80. Total cost: $52.35. At 150% markup: $131 retail, $65 wholesale. Round to $130 and $65 for clean pricing.

Solid 14k gold ring with a small faceted stone. Metal: 1.5g × $52 = $78. Gem: $35 (1ct semiprecious or a small genuine gemstone). Packaging: $3. Design: 30 min. Assembly: 45 min. Labor at $50/hr: 75/60 × $50 = $62.50. Overhead: $1. Total cost: $179.50. At 175% markup: $494 retail, $247 wholesale. Round to $495 retail. Solid gold plus stone setting commands the higher markup; fine jewelry customers expect it.

Five common pricing mistakes

1. Pricing by "what Etsy shows." Etsy averages on jewelry are depressed by drop-shippers and overseas sellers using different labor economics. Your handmade-in-USA piece cannot and should not compete at those averages.

2. Not charging design time on custom work. A custom ring with 45 minutes of sketching and stone-planning needs those minutes billed. Add them as a line-item design fee or bake them into the quote; do not eat them.

3. Using outdated metal spot prices. A six-month-old sterling price is probably 5-12% wrong. Update quarterly minimum, ideally monthly.

4. Matching wholesale prices at retail. If your Etsy listing shows the same price your boutique stockists offer, the boutique drops you. Keep retail higher on your own channels to protect your wholesale relationships.

5. Under-insuring shipped high-value pieces. USPS Priority Mail includes $100 insurance free. Anything above $100 retail needs paid insurance ($2-$5 per $100 of declared value). Price this into your shipping cost, not your piece cost.

Run the full picture with adjacent calculators

After retail pricing is set, run a specific sale through the Etsy fee calculator to see net-after-fees. If you plan to wholesale to boutiques or Faire, the wholesale number from this calculator is the sell-in price; set your retail anchor price 2x higher to preserve the keystone.
