Car decals are the bread and butter of vinyl Cricut shops. They sell year-round, they ship cheap in a bubble mailer, and buyers buy them in twos and threes. A shop with 15 strong decal listings can clear $1,500 to $3,000 per month on Etsy at moderate volume.

The key variable nobody thinks about first: vinyl type determines lifespan and price. Oracal 651 runs $1.20 per sq ft and lasts 3-5 years outdoors. Oracal 951 runs $2.50 to $3 per sq ft and lasts 7-9 years. A $10 decal made from 651 is a one-season decal. A $16 decal made from 951 is a five-year decal. Materials for a car decal

Vinyl choice is the biggest variable. Oracal 651 for short-life decals ($1.20/sqft), Oracal 751 for mid-tier ($1.80/sqft), Oracal 951 for premium and long-life outdoor ($2.50-$3/sqft). For car window decals where the decal is on the inside of the glass facing out, cast vinyl (951) is the gold standard.

Transfer tape is the other material. Buyers expect tape included so they can apply the decal to their car. Greenstar or R-Tape transfer tape runs $0.25 to $0.40 per sq ft. Include tape in your cost math; do not try to charge it separately unless you are doing mass quantity.

For a 4x4 inch decal (0.11 sq ft): vinyl $0.13 (651), tape $0.03. Materials $0.16. For a 12x12 inch decal (1 sq ft): vinyl $1.20 (651) or $2.70 (951), tape $0.25. Materials $1.45 (651) or $2.95 (951). Decals with heavy detail may use more vinyl due to waste.

Production time per decal

Design time is amortized across batch but eaten whole on single custom orders. 8 to 12 minutes in Cricut Design Space for simple decals, 15 to 20 minutes for complex multi-element designs.

Weeding is where complexity bites. Simple decals weed in 2 to 4 minutes. Complex (fine script fonts, detailed illustrations) weed in 8 to 15 minutes. Factor complexity into your pricing.

No pressing step for adhesive vinyl decals (unlike HTV). Apply transfer tape, package. That is 2 to 4 minutes per decal. Total 12 to 20 minutes per decal single.

What car decals typically sell for

Etsy searches for custom car decals show price ranges by size: 3x3 simple decals $4 to $8, 4x4 medium $7 to $12, 8x8 with detail $12 to $22, 12x12 large $18 to $32. Oracal 951 premium adds $2-$5 across all tiers.

Custom text decals (single-line names, quotes) are the highest-volume category. Multi-color logo decals and detailed illustrations are lower volume but command $25+ retail.

Bulk car decal packs (3-pack, 5-pack) work well at $12 to $18 per pack retail. Amortizes design time and lets buyers have variety.

Worked example: pricing a 4x4 custom car decal

4x4 Oracal 651 decal. Area 16 sq in (0.11 sq ft). Vinyl $0.13, tape $0.03. Materials $0.16. 10 min design, 4 weed, 2 pack = 16 min at $25/hr = $6.67. Total cost $6.83.

At 130% margin retail $15.71. Most Etsy 4x4 decals sit at $10 to $16. Net at $13 retail with $3 shipping is $9.40, or 47% net. Excellent margin on tight cost basis.

For a 12x12 premium 951 decal with complex design: materials $3, labor $12.08 at 29 min. Total cost $15.08. At 100% margin retail $30.16. Most premium large-decal listings sit at $28 to $35, matching this math.
